Visit the top gastronomy and culture market in Menorca
The Claustro del Carmen Market (Mercart des Claustre) is one of Mahón's most emblematic buildings and an essential stop if you are visiting Menorca. It is one of the most traditional markets in the city and has a wide range of products, restaurants and cultural activities such as concerts, exhibitions and shows. Here is a little bit about its history and what you can find in this market. Don't miss it!
The Mercado Claustro del Carmen was built in the 18th century next to the church of the same name. However, it lost its religious use during the Disentailment and today its walls and courtyard accommodate all kinds of cultural activities as well as a market.
The Claustro del Carmen is attached to the north façade of the church. It is a three-storey square building built made of limestone. After the Disentailment (1835) it was used as a prison, court building and market.
In the old monastic cells on the ground floor of the Cloustro there are stalls selling typical Menorcan sausages and cheeses, meats, fruit and vegetables, nuts and olives. It also offers a restaurant and ice-cream parlour to enjoy the typical delicacies of the island on the market terraces.
In addition to the gastronomic options, you cannot leave the market without visiting its many shops. Here you can find several fashion and accessories stores where you can buy top-quality typical garments of the island.
The typical Menorcan sandals, handmade dresses, wicker bags, hats and many more options to always carry a piece of Menorca with you.
The market also has a flower shop, a haberdashery shop and a shop with books, stories, agricultural products and other products typical of the island of Menorca.
The Mercado Claustro del Carmen has not only consolidated itself as a gastronomic benchmark in Mahón, but it is also the centre of various cultural and leisure activities, becoming a space for music, art and culture.
Without a doubt, the Claustro del Carmen gastronomic and cultural market is a must for anyone visiting Menorca, so take note of its opening hours and how to get there.
The market is open every day from Monday to Friday between 7:00 and 21:00, Saturdays from 7:00 to 18:00 and Sundays from 7:00 to 15:00.
