Located in the north of the island of Mallorca, Alcudia is easily reached from the airport (60 km) by accessible public transport (eurotaxi) or private-hire vehicle (rented adapted transport, either self-driven or with a driver), and from the commercial port (<2 km), which has direct connections from Barcelona, Menorca and France.

Alcudia has one of the most important historical heritages on the island, following the conquest of the Muslims by King James I, along with the Roman remains of the Pollentia archaeological site.

As a tourist destination, Alcudia is open all year round, is ideal for family trips, and since 2016 has been working hard to make it an enjoyable experience for everyone.

Day 1: The town walls of Alcudia

Pollentia

Let’s head to the historic town centre of Alcudia and the Tourist Information Office, where the staff are fully trained in helping people with disabilities. They’ll be able to provide you with everything you need to know about the accessibility of the town’s tourist resources. There’s a guide in six languages with information on beaches, restaurants, leisure and cultural options, accommodation and countless other possibilities, depending on your particular accessibility needs.

They also have an A3-sized folder that you can touch, read and hear. It contains information on the route around the historic centre of Alcudia and its main points of interest (town hall, museum, library, church, etc.), in embossed print, Braille and with a QR code linking to the accessible Alcudia Tour app, which will act as a guide around the town.

Once you’ve got all the appropriate information in an adapted format, you’re ready to set off.  Next to the wall’s entrance there is a large vertical map with visual information on the site, and a horizontal tactile map to help visualise the surroundings.

A visit to the historic centre can last around two hours, but the area is so full of fascinating shops full of souvenirs and restaurants where you can sit and enjoy both local and international cuisine, a visit can easily last the whole day.

The breadth and size of the walls mean it’s both easy and comfortable to enjoy a stroll around them during the day without worrying about the high summer temperatures, as the numerous shaded areas make it a great alternative to the town’s great beaches.

A few metres from the main town gate is the archaeological site of Pollentia. This can be tricky for people with reduced mobility to navigate, due to the ground’s uneven terrain. However, information on accessibility can be found in the guide to help make an informed decision, depending on your needs.

It’s a perfect day out that everyone can enjoy.

Day 2: Enjoying the sea

Silla AnfibiaPasarela Playa

Following your day in town, it’s time to head for Alcudia’s port, ready to make the most of the promenade, the beach and the wonderful waters of the Mediterranean.

There is another accessible tourist information office at the port, where the equally well-trained staff will provide another A3-sized map of the port, the promenade and the beach. The map is in embossed print and in Braille, and there is an audio service that also provides information on the area.

Once you’ve collected all the information you need, you could take a stroll along the promenade as far as the beach entrance, where at the lifeguard base, not far from calle Saturno, full technical assistance is available for adapted bathing. The assisted bathing service is free of charge and available from May to October.

There are two amphibious chairs for adults, one for a child or shorter person, or with crutches. There is also a shaded area reserved specifically for adapted bathing.

When it comes to lunch or dinner, options include both the area of the promenade, with a range of bars and restaurants on the front, and the Alcudiamar port, ideal for a comfortable stroll along the itineraries indicated as accessible routes, and which is perfect for admiring the boats and enjoying the sea breeze.

Another option for the day might involve simply enjoying what the surroundings offer your senses, without a worry in the world.

Day 3: Leisure

Hidropark AlcúdiaElevador Sa Bassa Blanca

After a day relaxing by the beach, it’s time to get active, and Alcudia has options for everyone. If water is your thing and you’re travelling as a family, the Hidropark water park is a great and accessible way to spend the day. The park features a specially adapted itinerary and bathing facilities, shaded areas and easy-access pools, making it ideal for a fun day out.

If you prefer to keep exploring the town’s culture and nature, we recommend an excursion to Sa Bassa Blanca Museum, which is in an ideal setting in the midst of greenery, with lovely views across the bay. The ease of access and the information provided by the staff will help you explore the forest of outdoor sculptures and accessible interiors, which feature the private collection of Ben and Yanik Jacober.

Alcudia also has accessible walking routes, bird watching in the Albufera, water sports, boat trips and countless other possibilities to help you enjoy your holiday.

There’s a lot on offer here in the Balearic Islands, and Alcudia is the perfect base from where you can start exploring.
