Cultural heritage in Formentera

Formentera is smaller of the islands that make up the Pitiusas (Ibiza and Formentera), and has a unique cultural heritage that distinguishes it from the rest of the islands. Since prehistoric times to the present day, an endless flow of settlers has left its mark on Formentera, which is reflected in its architectural heritage, gastronomy and culture. The La Mola defensive tower was built to protect the island from pirates and offers impressive panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea and the island’s cliffs. Formentera also has a numerous archaeological sites, such as the megalithic monuments of Ca na Costa and some defensive constructions from the Talayotic period, which can be visited and which give a glimpse of the island's fascinating prehistoric history. The remains of the island's ethnological heritage is completed by the parish churches of Sant Francesc Xavier, Sant Ferran de Ses Roques and Pilar de la Mola, its lighthouses, numerous dry docks scattered along the coast, flour mills, simple country houses, as well as the unique, ancestral sound of the traditional Caramellessung during Christmas and Easter celebrations. Numerous festivals and cultural events take place throughout the year, such as the Formentera Jazz Festival and the celebration of the "Salt Festival", which pays tribute to the island's traditional salt industry.
