A visit to the charming village of Valldemossa is a must on a trip to Mallorca. Located in the Serra de Tramuntana and declared a World Heritage Site in 2011, the beauty of this place made it a refuge and inspiration for great artists and the setting for legends that still live on in the collective imagination.
Valldemossa is only 17 kilometres from Palma, but it has managed to conserve its most traditional essence. An unmissable visit is the Valldemossa Charterhouse, a spectacular 15th-century monastery that served as a refuge for great artists like the composer Frédéric Chopin, who spent a winter with his wife in cell number 4. Years later, artists such as Santiago Rusiñol, Rubén Darío and Jorge Luis Borges also chose it as a place of retreat.
Although it is an inland village, Valldemossa also has a coastline. The charming fishing port and the tiny Cala Sa Marina are 6 kilometres away. And you cannot go home without tasting a delicious coca de patata, a potato sweet roll.
