Immerse yourself in this ancient animal market with more than 700 years of history and discover why it is a favourite among the people from Majorca
On the first Sunday in May, Sineu is transformed into a bustling medieval market that attracts visitors from all over Majorca. Fira de Sineu is today one of the oldest and most emblematic events on the island and maintains its traditional spirit with a unique exhibition of local breeds of the archipelago, agricultural machinery, local products and handicrafts.
Majorca, 1318. King Sancho I granted Sineu a privilege to hold a large livestock fair on the first Sunday in May. It was a big annual event attended by merchants and muleteers from all over the island. 700 years later, Fira de Sineu continues to be held and maintains the spirit of yesteryear by holding a large agricultural fair with exhibitions of local breeds, agricultural machinery and local products.
Walking among the stalls is a sensory experience. The bright colours of fruit and vegetables mingle with the aromas of sobrassada, sausages and cheeses. Artisans display their handmade products, from basketry to cutlery: each piece is a work of art reflecting the island's rich cultural heritage. The fair is also famous for the auction of the best specimens of porc negre, a local breed of pig that is highly valued for its high-quality meat.
Cultural heritage and tradition
Fira de Sineu is not only a place to buy, but also to learn and enjoy. Demonstrations of traditional farming techniques and displays of animals such as chickens, pigs, rabbits and sheep offer a fascinating insight into rural Majorcan life. In addition to fresh produce, the fair is a reflection of the rich Majorcan culture. Each stall is a window into deep-rooted local traditions. So, at this fair, you will not only be able to take home a little piece of the most authentic and traditional Majorca, but also magnificent souvenirs of the oldest fair on the island.
An experience for the whole family
In addition to the market, where hundreds of stalls line the streets and create a festive atmosphere, traditional music and dancing, along with parades and competitions, enliven the day and provide entertainment for the whole family. Don't miss the morphological competitions of local breeds, such as the Majorcan horse competition or the ca de bestiar (cattle dog, in Catalan), a highly valued local breed of dog.
You will also have the opportunity to taste typical Majorcan dishes in the many bars and restaurants in Sineu. Some outstanding dishes are arròs brut, tumbet or frit, a delicious combination of fried and well seasoned potatoes, vegetables and pork or lamb offal.
A visit to Fira de Sineu is an immersion in Majorcan authenticity. It is an opportunity to soak up the local hospitality, support the producers and artisans and discover why this fair is still a must after more than 700 years of history.
