A unique home in touristic Ibiza
Dwelling designed and inhabited since 1960 by the German architect Erwin Broner. It is part of contemporary architectural heritage thanks to his widow Gisela Broner, who donated it to the City of Ibiza.
Casa Broner was built in 1960 as a residence and studio for German architect and painter Erwin Broner (Munich 1898-Kreuth 1971).
The author forms part of the group of intellectuals that took refuge on the island after fleeing from Nazi Germany. As an architect he played an important role along with others such as Josep Lluís Sert or Germán Rodríguez Arias in developing rationalist architecture on the island.
It was inaugurated as a multi-purpose house museum in February 2010 to highlight his important legacy as an architect and a painter, and to promote research and recording, conservation and dissemination of modern contemporary architecture as well as rural architecture, landscape and territory architecture on Ibiza and the Balearic Islands.
It was a donation from Gisela Broner to the City of Ibiza. She also donated the archives, drawings, photographs, objects, furniture, sketches and paintings to other local institutions.
The house is integrated in the network of Iconic Houses, which includes emblematic buildings such as Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater, La Pedrera by Gaudí, the Bloc house by Josep Lluís Sert, can Lis by Jørn Utzon, etc.
It is listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural with the category of Monument (2000).
