Museum Diocesà Santa Maria d'Eivissa i Formentera

Inside its chapterhouse and sacristy, the Cathedral of Ibiza houses a museum featuring liturgical items, altarpieces and traditional jewellery.

The “Santa María” Diocesan Museum of Ibiza and Formentera is the body designed to conserve, study and exhibit everything relating to the history and life of the Church on these islands. Opened in 1965, it underwent major renovation work in the late 1990s. Following a long and complex phase of work, the new museum was opened on 7 August 2006.

The Museum, accessed from inside the Cathedral, is located in its sacristy and chapterhouse. On display is an important set of silver- and gold-work, altarpieces, paintings, sculptures and religious decorations from the 18th to 20th centuries related to the history of the church on Ibiza and Formentera. The museum also has a collection of traditional Ibizan jewellery, with rosaries and wrought crosses.

You can visit the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, the place in the Cathedral containing the sacrarium where the Blessed Sacrament is kept. It is therefore a place for silence and personal prayer. This anteroom of the Museum exhibits several pieces of particular historical and artistic interest. Beyond the anteroom you will find four spacious rooms where various liturgical objects, religious books, oil paintings from different schools, etc, are exhibited.
