A Spectacle Visible from anywhere across the Islands
The eclipse will be visible from any location across Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera under virtually identical conditions. That’s why there's absolutely no need to travel to specific hotspots, elevated peaks, lighthouses, viewpoints, cliff tops or protected nature reserves to enjoy the spectacle.
Watching it from home, your tourist accommodation, or any nearby open space helps to prevent overcrowding, relieve pressure on the road network, and protect the region's most sensitive environments.
How to watch the eclipse safely
Eye safety is paramount when viewing a solar eclipse.
To protect your vision, it is essential to follow these guidelines:
- Use certified eyewear exclusively, ensuring you only use officially approved eclipse glasses that carry the ISO 12312-2 safety certification.
- Never look directly at the Sun without the correct safety equipment.
- Do not use conventional sunglasses, X-rays, smoked glass, or any other home-made viewing devices.
- Do not view the eclipse through mobile phones, cameras, binoculars, or telescopes unless they are fitted with specialized solar filters.
- Keep a close eye on children and the elderly to ensure they are safe.
- If in doubt, avoid looking directly at the Sun altogether.
A safe alternative is to observe the phenomenon using a pinhole projector, which allows you to watch the shadow of the eclipse risk-free.
As a significant part of the experience involves waiting outdoors, it is also highly recommended to wear sun cream, a hat, and appropriate clothing to shield yourself from the sun.
Plan your journeys
High levels of traffic are expected on the day of the eclipse.
That's why you are highly recommended:
- Plan your journeys in advance
- To plan your routes in advance and check traffic updates before setting off.
- Always follow the instructions of the relevant authorities.
- Avoid unnecessary travel wherever possible.
- Do not park on hard shoulders, emergency access routes or unauthorised areas.
Responsible transport helps to improve safety for everyone and to reduce the impact on the local area.
Respect natural areas
The Balearic Islands have a limited and environmentally highly sensitive territory. Many of the areas that may be attractive for viewing the eclipse - such as natural viewpoints, cliffs, rural areas, or protected spaces - have limited capacity and high ecological fragility.
That's why it's important:
- To circulate only through authorised access points.
- To respect existing signage.
- Not to stray from designated paths.
- Not to trespass on private property.
- Not to block country lanes or emergency routes.
- To collect all rubbish and dispose of it in the appropriate places.
To preserve the landscapes that make the Balearic Islands unique is a shared responsibility.
Exercise the utmost caution due to the risk of forest fires
The eclipse is due to take place at a time when the risk of forest fires is high. If you decide to watch it near a natural or wooded area, it is vital to take every possible precaution.
Remember that:
- Lighting fires is strictly prohibited.
- No heat sources of any kind should be used.
- Do not discard cigarette butts, firecrackers, or any item that could generate a spark.
- No waste must be left behind in nature.
- In the event of any column of smoke or sign of fire, call 112 immediately
If you watch the eclipse from the sea
The sea will also be a privileged vantage point to contemplate the phenomenon, but a high concentration of vessels is expected.
Before you set off:
- Check the weather forecast.
- Check that you have life jackets, lights and safety equipment.
- Secure any objects that might move around on board.
Whilst sailing:
- Maintain a safe speed and a proper safety distance.
- Watch out for swimmers and other vessels.
- Maintain a continuous watch on VHF channel 16.
- Do not drink alcohol if you are operating a vessel.
- Do not moor boats to one another.
- Do not use flares unless it is an emergency.
What's more, it is essential to protect the marine environment:
- Do not throw rubbish into the sea.
- Take all waste back to land.
- Never anchor on Posidonia meadows.
In case of emergency, contact Channel 16 or call 112.
