Cultural route through the places related to Franciscan missionary Brother Junípero Serra, born in Petra and canonised in 2005
The legacy of Brother Junípero Serra (1713-1784) is evident all over the town. This Franciscan missionary founded, among others, the mission of San Gabriel (1771), currently in the metropolitan area of Los Angeles (California). He was beatified in 1988 by Pope John Paul II and canonised in 2015 by Pope Francis.
This route passes through several enclaves connected to Junípero Serra (1713-1784), from the town of Petra. His memory is honoured with monuments such as the bust by Frances Torrents (1970), a local historian and chaplain who worked to spread the life and works of Brother Junípero; the parish church of Saint Peter (1582), which houses the baptismal font where he was baptised; the square and monument that were dedicated to him (1913) to commemorate the anniversary of his birth; San Bernardino convent (17th century), where he received his initial education; his birthplace (17th century) and the Centro de Estudios fray Junípero Serra (1959), and the Bonany cross (1949), erected to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the departure of the Majorcan missionary.
