Cave open for visits Coves del Drach

The Cuevas del Drach (Drach Caves), a series of caves located in Porto Cristo, are some of the largest caves on Mallorca, almost 2,400 metres long and with a maximum depth of 25 metres under the surface. There are four interconnected caves: the Cueva de los Franceses (Cave of the French), the Cueva de Luiss Salvador (Cave of Louis Salvador), the Cueva Blanca (White Cave) and the Cueva Negra (Black Cave).

They were formed by the entry of the sea and are believed to date from the Myocene Period. Inside they harbour one of the largest underground lakes in the world, called Llac Martel, 117 metres long and 30 wide. It is slightly salty – which proves its connection with the Mediterranean sea – and its temperature is around 17ºC.

In this setting, full of mystery and charm, classical music concerts are held every day featuring works by Caballero, Chopin and Offenbach, among others. After the concert, the audience is welcome to take a boat ride around the lake. A tour through the immensity of the cave will reveal amazing stalactites and stalagmites, illuminated thanks to the efforts of engineer Carlos Buigas back in 1935.
