Summer comes to Mallorca and the atmosphere begins to liven up with the arrival of the most popular events on the island. Numerous and varied in theme, there are many festivals on the island, but of all of them there is one that stands out for its setting and its reputation: the Bellver Castle Classical Music Festival.
The castle was built by King Jaume II in the early fourteenth century and is one of the few circular castles in Europe, as well as being the oldest of its type. Located three kilometres from the city of Palma, Bellver Castle is surrounded by a lush pine forest with this majestic building perched atop a hill 112 metres above sea level. It is a unique corner of the city with privileged views across Palma and its bay.
The castle has been put to many different uses throughout its history. In 1931, the Second Spanish Republic gave the castle to the city together with the surrounding forest. In 1932 it became a museum and was even used as a prison in the first months of the Civil War.
Later, in 1976, it was renovated to become the museum of history of the city of Palma, housing Cardinal Despuig’s collection of classical sculptures. Since the 90s it frequently hosts formal occasions, concerts and cultural events. Its location and visibility from the sea and from any point in the city have made it one of Mallorca’s most prominent symbols.
Every year during the month of July, Bellver Castle is transformed into a spectacular venue that draws multitudes of attendees to see numerous local and international artists performing the best-known classical music. The works of Mozart, Beethoven, Wagner and Tchaikovsky are some examples of the wonderful repertoire that you can listen to and enjoy in this incomparable setting.
The cell where Frédéric Chopin and George Sand stayed at the Royal Carthusian monastery of Valldemossa is the breath-taking backdrop for this classical music concert series.
