From April to September, the Bartolomé March Foundation’s beautiful building, an icon of art and culture, is the setting chosen to host part of the world music programme of the acclaimed Deià festival.

The Palau March is an unmissable stop on cultural tours of the city of Palma for many reasons. To tell you all about it, we need to go back a few years to 1939, when the well-known Majorcan financier Joan March Ordinas commissioned the architects Luis Guitiérrez Soto and Gabriel Alomar Esteve to build a summer residence for the March family in Palma.

For this commission, they chose a unique setting in the historic centre of the city, surrounded by iconic monuments such as the Cathedral and the Almudaina Palace, and by 1945, construction of the six-storey palace was complete. Heavily influenced by the baroque style, the palace’s notable features include the ceremonial courtyard, the facade and the garden terrace, a spectacular viewpoint offering stunning views of the city.

In 1975, this spectacular residence became the headquarters of the Bartolomé March Foundation. Passionate about culture and patronage, the son of Joan March and Leonor Servera set up the famous March Foundation to house nothing more nor less than a museum with temporary exhibitions and a permanent collection of contemporary sculpture, a library partly open to the public containing a valuable collection of manuscripts, exquisite books and artistic bindings, as well as the auditorium that brings the music of the Deià International Music Festival to the city of Palma.

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to enjoy around eight concerts featuring music ranging from chamber music and jazz to more ethnic rhythms such as flamenco and folk music. And you can accompany this with a healthy dose of art and culture by visiting the treasures safeguarded by the Palau March. Best of all, entrance to the concerts is free - you just need to book your tickets in advance by telephone to make sure of a seat.

So now you know! If you’re in Palma between April and September, take a look at the calendar of events and come and enjoy yourself at this prestigious festival.
