Harvest and wine in September
In the beautiful town of Binissalem, located in the foothills of the Serra de Tramuntana, a unique festival that captures the essence of the Mallorcan winemaking tradition unfolds: the Fiestas des Vermar. This is a unique event to discover the wines of DO Binissalem Mallorca, understand their impact on the economy and culture of the region and enjoy the activities related to the end of the grape harvest.
The Fiestas des Vermar mark the culmination of the grape harvest season in Binissalem. For almost three weeks in September, the village is transformed into a festive scene celebrating the bounty of the land and the joy of harvesting its fruits. The people of Mallorca dress in their traditional costumes, creating an atmosphere of authenticity and celebration.
The first weekend is an opportunity to warm up and immerse yourself in the festive atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy activities such as the boot-racing competition, where dexterity and balance are put to the test, as well as cultural itineraries and art exhibitions that reveal the history and creativity of the region. At night, popular dances enliven the streets, creating an atmosphere of joy and celebration of the Binissalemeraidentity.
During the second weekend, the excitement peaks with a variety of spectacular events. It begins on Saturday at noon with the reading of the proclamation that kicks off the festivities and brings together hundreds of people in front of the town hall. This is followed by the great grape-throwing battle and a delicious popular lunch of fideus de vermar, a typical dish of the Binissalem grape harvest. Moreover, on Sunday afternoon, in the Plaça de l'Església, a grape-stomping competition is held while traditional grape harvest tunes are sung.
The third weekend marks the climax of the Fiestas des Vermar with a spectacular parade of floats showcasing local creativity and tradition. The inauguration of the Fira del Vi is another highlight, where wine lovers can taste a wide selection of DO wines. During this weekend, a large number of binissalemers dress up in regional costumes, creating an atmosphere of authenticity and cultural pride, while popular dances fill the streets with music and joy.
