Marine Reserve Illes Malgrat

The small islands that make up the Malgrats Islands Marine Reserve rise impressively across from the bay of Santa Ponça, a spectacular place to watch the sunset in the municipality of Calvià.

Like its neighbouring reserve at Isla del Toro, this reserve features highly diverse habitats and posidonia meadows are abundant in the area. The rocky areas of the seabed are home to the most common sedentary species in the Mediterranean like groupers and sea bass, some of which are very large.

As well as being an oasis for marine wildlife, the Malgrats Islands are also home to a subspecies of lizard exclusive to these islands, the Podarcis lilfordi hartmanni, and to several protected terrestrial species.

Its 89 hectares are also a Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA). The shag, the Cory's shearwater and the Balearic shearwater, a bird that only nests in the Balearic Islands and which is critically endangered, choose this spot to nest.

The Magrats Islands were also designated as a Site of Community Importance (SCI) within the European Union's Natura 2000 network.
