Museum Can Alcover

Institution dedicated to Mossèn Antoni M. Alcover, clergyman and researcher in topics of history and culture of the Balearic Islands. Author of the compilation of more than 400 " rondalles " (tales and short stories) under the pseudonym Jordi des Racó.

Joan Alcover Maspons (Palma 1854-1926) has an extensive literary oeuvre. He is the author of the lyrics to “La Balanguera”, Mallorca’s anthem, poems like “Desolació”, “La reliquia” and “La Serra”, among many others. He forms an essential referent in poetry written in Catalan. Along with Miquel Costa i Llobera, Joan Alcover is the promoter of the Escola Mallorquina (Mallorcan School) and a referent for generations of later poets on the island.

In 1968, Pau Alcover de Haro, Joan Alcover’s son and a founding member of Obra Cultural Balear, bequeathed the house where the poet composed his work and where he died, for the purpose of creating a premise for this museum.

Can Alcover has three functions: As the institutional base of the OCB, as the Joan Alcover museum house and as a centre for cultural activities. The museum house reproduces the “sala de tertúlias” (room devoted to literary gatherings) and the poet’s study, places that allow one to get a closer feeling for the period in which Joan Alcover lived and for his creative universe.
