Contemporary art at a bastion of the Renaissance
Es Baluard Museu d'Art Modern i Contemporani of Palma, located on the edge of the renaissance town wall of Palm, exhibits national and international artists since it opened in 2004.
The Es Baluard Museum is located on the edge of the bastion of Sant Pere, which forms part of the renaissance wall that enclosed the city of Palma until the early 20th century. The wall also has an old 17th century water reservoir that supplied the "Puig de Sant Pere" neighbourhood.
The museum building, inaugurated in 2004, blends in with the lush heritage around it. It was designed by Lluís García-Ruiz, Jaume García-Ruiz, Vicente Tomás and Ángel Sánchez Cantalejo. It is divided into three floors that connect to the outside, the walls and each other by ramps, skylights and large indoor balconies.
The museum houses works by the main artists and movements that have been converging on the Illes Balears ever since the early 20th century. From its pictorial modernism represented by Joaquín Sorolla, Hermen Anglada-Camarasa and Joaquim Mir, the avant-garde 20th-century artists such as Picasso, Joan Miró and Fernand Léger, to the artistic trends in the late 20th and early 21st centuries on the basis of the diversity of languages (painting, sculpture, photography, video, installation, etc.).
Es Baluard also holds leisure activities and outreach events involving contemporary art, temporary exhibits, performances, musical activities, educational workshops, specialised seminars, etc.
