An original exhibition of traditional craftsmanship in the emblematic Capdepera castle
The ‘Museu de la Llata’ (Sheaf Museum) is in the Capdepera castle, in the so-called governor’s house. The tour provides information on the process to prepare handcrafted products such as the plaiting of palm leaves (Chamaerops humilis), an important activity on the island before the start of tourism.
The museum displays the tools required to manufacture the plaited palm products (‘llata’), a craft that was one of the most important activities in the town until the start of the tourism industry in the 1960s. The exhibition presents all the steps required to complete it: collection, drying and whitening of the palm leaves (Chamaerops humilis), plaiting and preparation of articles such as baskets, ropes or brushes. It is located in a 60 m2 room inside the walls of the Capdepera castle.
