ABOUT THE SON MARROIG MUSEUM

The Son Marroig Museum is a private institution created in 1927 with the aim of preserving and disseminating the life and work of Archduke Luis Salvador, a key figure in the cultural history and patronage of the late 19th century and early 20th century.

It is located in a spectacular spot with extraordinary views of the Mediterranean and the imposing mole de sa Foradada of the Tramuntana mountain range.

Archduke Luis Salvador bought the possessió of Son Marroig in 1876 after the acquisition of Miramar, both located in extraordinary places. He reformed it preserving the fortified tower, probably from the 16th century, which protected the area from frequent corsair raids.

After his death in 1915, the property passed to his secretary, Majorcan Antoni Vives, and since 1927 it has operated as a museum.

Likewise, the Casa Museo de Son Marroig is a place for celebrations, mainly weddings, and since 1978 it has hosted the annual Deià International Music Festival, the municipality in which it is located.

The museum also houses a collection of works by renowned artists such as Joan Bauçà, Anglada Camarassa, Eliseu Meifrén, Joaquim Mir, Antoni Prats and Erwin Hubert, among others.

The visit to the house is completed with a tour of its gardens, where the Archduke left his mark: with its immense cistern, the ‘Des Galliner’ viewpoint and the lonian marble temple that serves as the viewpoint of the Son Marroig Museum.
