A neo-Mudejar building
One of the most remarkable buildings in the Plaza de Cort is Can Corbella, located opposite the Town Hall on the corner of Sant Domingo street.
It is a neo-Mudejar building framed within the mediaevalist historicist trends that were popular in the late 19th century. It was designed as a multi-family home. It is five stories high and is based on a design by Nicolau Lliteres rendered at the behest of the Corbella family.
The ground floor, which is used for commerce, features wrought-iron arches with stained glass windows. The three upper stories jut out from the vertical plane of the ground floor and have tall windows with lobed decorations separated by ornamental wooden columns. The upper storey is set back further than the others, at the same depth as the ground floor. An octagonal tower crowns the building.
The decoration on the ground floor includes soffits bearing subjects referring to the fine arts, with characteristics that partially appropriate the Art Nouveau style.
