Viewpoint Son Marroig

Sa Foradada is a peninsula of the Tramuntana mountain range, in the municipal district of Deià. Its name is due to the impressive hole that can be seen in it, measuring some 18m in diameter, and which can be seen from various parts of the mountain range. The best place to see it from is the viewpoint of Son Marroig, especially at sunset. A romantic and striking image of the island of Mallorca.

There are several anecdotes about the figure of Archduke Lluís Salvador of Austria, who loved Mallorca and acquired, among others, the possessions of Son Marroig and the old monastery of Miramar. One of these maintains that when the archduke purchased the estate of Son Marroig, which included the peninsula of la Foradada, someone told him that he had paid an exorbitant price for it. He replied that with what it had cost him there was nothing left to pay for the hole of Sa Foradada.

It was the archduke who ordered the construction of the path that links Son Marroig with Sa Foradada, and a small quay for him to moor his magnificent sailing boat Nixe.

There was a famous battle at this spot: in 1582, one hundred and fifty North African corsairs were defeated by just fifty Christians under the command of Mateu Sanglada. As a consequence of this and other raids, it was decided to build a system of defence towers, such as the Tower of Sa Pedrissa, to protect the coasts.
