The marine reserves of Ibiza and Formentera: a paradise of posidonia
Discover the green lung of the Mediterranean: the posidonia meadows that guard these Balearic Islands
The marine reserves of Ibiza and Formentera have something in common: posidonia oceanica. The seabed of these islands protects the area considered to be the green lung of the Mediterranean as it is covered by hectares of posidonia meadows. This marine plant releases a considerable amount of oxygen and stores 40% of the carbon dioxide absorbed by coastal vegetation.
The posidonia meadows of Ibiza and Formentera were even declared a World Heritage Site in 1999. For this reason alone, it's worth diving into their depths and floating over the immense forests of this plant, watching its meandering movement to the sound of the ocean currents and admiring the delicate biodiversity protected by its leaves.
Discover the underwater treasures of the three marine reserves that protect the southernmost Balearic Islands and let yourself be carried away by the incredible beauty of their underwater landscapes.
