Mediterranean flavours in a bottle
Increasingly more establishments are adding to their drinks list the artisan beers made on the island and the lemon soft drinks that contain the best of Mallorca. These products join the traditional list of artisan alcoholic beverages such as the Palo or Herb liqueurs, which are excellent as an aperitif or as a digestive after dessert.
Mallorca heartily jumps on the artisan beer production bandwagon. In recent years there have been a multitude of new companies started on the island, run by young people enthusiastic about this natural and healthy product that is free from artificial additives. They use grains such as barley and wheat, water, hops, sugar and yeast, with an artisan production process that begins with grinding of the malts all the way through to bottling.
Some companies have small premises where you can sample their beers right at the production site, and their owners will explain the creation process and the nuances of each version. Some producers opt for the English, German or North American style, while others choose different malt mixes and subject them to a high degree of fermentation. The most innovative create suggestive and unique versions by adding cilantro, orange peel, orange blossom, lemon peel, green olives and even cocoa.
These beers can be savoured in bars and restaurants around the island or at the factories themselves. You will also find them at beer fests, such as Beer Palma, which in May gathers over 150 brands in the city.
Artisan soft drinks are also produced in Mallorca, made with all types of local fruit, as a tonic with grapefruit or mandarin flavours, or a delicious one hundred per cent natural lemonade.
In addition to beers and soft drinks, alcoholic drinks are also made on the island with traditional methods, and today they have their own quality seals: the Mallorca Palo, a richly dark and sweet drink, and the Mallorca Herb liqueurs which are produced by macerating a secret combination of aromatic herbs in anisette.
