Bonfires, pyrotechnics and tradition to celebrate Sant Antoni in Mallorca
Can you imagine seeing someone climb a 20-metre pine tree, planted in the town square, with no branches to hold on to and lathered in soap? In that case, you shouldn't miss the festivities of Sant Antoni de Pollença! One of the island's most spectacular traditions is celebrated in this beautiful Mallorcan town, which is full of charm and history.
The celebrations in Pollença are centred on the 16th and 17th of January, but begin days before with activities for the whole family and spectacular correfocs, which light up the winter nights with flares and fireworks while the dimonis dance to the sound of drums. On the day of the vigil of Sant Antoni, 16th January, amidst the darkness, bonfires light up different parts of the town, Port de Pollença and Cala Sant Vicenç, in a fascinating spectacle that invites you to immerse yourself in the magic of fire and Mallorcan tradition.
But it is on the following day, 17 January, that the celebration reaches its climax. At midday, the crowds gather at a nearby estate to carry the Pi de Pollença to the town square. The Pi de Sant Antoni is a symbol of the festival and a witness to the devotion of the community. It is a pine trunk, a maximum of 21 metres high, cut and debarked days before, and guarded on the farm. On the day of Sant Antoni, the young people carry it with vigour and solemnity in a festive parade to the Plaza Vieja Pollença.
The real fun starts when they lather it up, to make it more slippery, and plant it and then climb it. In a display of skill and competitive spirit, participants vie for the honour of reaching the top, where a bag full of confetti awaits to celebrate their victory.
Meanwhile, in Port de Pollença, they celebrate the same tradition, although they go to Formentor to look for the Pi and plant it in the Miquel Capllonch square to climb it. Dare to experience the magic of Sant Antoni and escape to Pollença this winter!
