Enter the world of aromatic herbs in Selva
In June, the main square of the village de Fira de Ses Herbes (herbal fair) is on display; you have the opportunity to meet a large number of local aromatic herbs, their tradition and numerous applications for medicine, cosmetics, liqueurs or local gastronomy. You can also see how fresh myrtle is distilled in a one-pot-sized copper kettle. You will discover one of the most impressive shows in the summer calendar of the islands.
For centuries, the inhabitants of the mountain villages, such as Selva, have entered the woods to collect herbs for pain-relieving drinks or aromatic herbs to season their dishes. On the second Sunday in June you will have the opportunity to see how the village reminds of these activities with a fair in the church square and the surrounding streets. On this day, all the buildings decorate their balconies and windows with banderoles on which are painted the characteristic herbs of the area, like the myrtle (murta).
On Sunday due to myrtle collectors rise up early to climb into the mountains and collect this plant. Do not miss out on the pitch at around 10am. They are accompanied by traditional music groups, decorated wagons, devil-dressed children (dimonis boiets), and giants and big heads from the village and the surrounding area like Binissalem. Then you can watch as the myrtle is distilled in a huge copper kettle on the main square, leaving a perfumed with curative effects.
On the days before the fair, you can enjoy the exhibitions of local artists, music performances, and conferences on herbs. And in the bars and restaurants of the village, you will be offered dishes with aromatic herbs as the main ingredients.
The fair is a wonderful excuse to visit Selva and to get acquainted with local buildings of great interest, like the Sant Llorenç parish church on the main square which you reach on a monumental staircase. The temple has preserved its ancient Gothic façade dating back to the 14th century, but the rest of the building has a more recent origin. The church adorns the altar of Calvary, a delicate work of Gabriel Mòger II from the 15th century.
