Created in 1981, the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró is dedicated to spreading knowledge of the work of artist Joan Miró as well as promoting contemporary art in general. It has significant holdings on the artist's work and also organises temporary exhibitions and other cultural activities.

The Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró arose (1981) from the artist Joan Miró and his wife Pilar Juncosa's donation of his workshops and all the art, objects, and documentation in them. Miró created the Foundation to encourage and promote artistic creation as well as to preserve his workshops, his creative space from 1956 to 1983.

The vast collection of Miró's works display outstanding richness and a wide variety of techniques and materials Miró used in his creative process. It contains paintings, drawings, sculpture and graphic arts, over a time frame that spans from 1908 to 1981.

In addition to the permanent display, temporary exhibits are held on artists from the national and international scene of art today, in many different languages (painting, sculpture, installation, photography). Cultural activities are also organised for diverse audiences: concerts, guided tours, awards and fellowships to spread contemporary creative values and help train the younger generations of artists.

The Foundation has three unique buildings that make up one of the most renown groupings of architecture. The first is Son Boter, an 18th-century Majorcan house  Joan Miró used as a studio for painting and sculpting. The second is Taller Sert, a studio designed by his architect friend Josep Lluís Sert and built in 1956. The third is the Moneo building, home of the Foundation and designed by architect Rafael Moneo and inaugurated in 1992.
