A green space restored for the enjoyment of the city, art lovers and gardening enthusiasts
Art and gardening are linked to the origins and more recent history of the Marivent Palace, one of the residences of the Spanish royal family, located in Cala Major. The complex, which was built between 1923 and 1925, held the Saridakis collection, which belonged to its first owner. Since 2017, the year the gardens were opened to the public, they have held a permanent exhibition of sculptures by the artist Joan Miró.
The main entrance to the Palace leads to over 9000 m2 of gardens, which are home to some 40 species, mostly of Mediterranean flora. The ubiquitous pine trees are side-by-side with cypresses, ornamental trees and fruit trees, arranged in groves and flowerbeds. In all the different suggested routes, the topiaries stand out, the artistic pruning of the plants, which form geometric shapes with rounded profiles from bougainvillea, cypress and boxwood.
Amidst the topiary are twelve bronze sculptures by Joan Miró. The artist's genius and imagination fill these gardens, recovered for the enjoyment of tourists and citizens alike, with symbolism.
