Garden Sa Torre Cega

The gardens cover the hill that rises over the sea next to Cala Ratjada port. At the top is Sa Torre Cega, the summer residence of the March family, a lineage of prominent Majorcan bankers. The gardens were firstly overseen by Elionor Servera, then from the1970s onwards, by her son Bartomeu March.

Visitors can enjoy a unique place in Majorca created by some of the best landscape designers of the 20th century, experiencing the delicate harmony established between the gardens, art and surroundings. It has become a real open-air sculpture museum with works by Barbara Hepworth, Xavier Corberó, Francisco Otero Besteiro, César Montaña, Eusebio Sempere, Martín Chirino, Juan de Ávalos, Juli Guasch and José María Sirvent, among others.

The artistic concept was created by eminent landscape artist Russell Page (1906–1985). He designed a route through small gardens conceived of as exquisite vegetative spaces integrated into the original pine forest, which featured specially selected sculptures by contemporary artists.

He was succeeded by Leandro Silva (1930–2000), who designed other gardens such as the orange tree garden. Finally, Majorcan architect Gabriel Alomar (1910–1997), who created the trellis inspired by the one in the Alfàbia Gardens, took part.

In 2001 a strong storm devastated a large part of the pine forest and caused damage to the sculptures. Since then, rigorous restoration work has been carried out to bring back the splendour of the gardens, where part of the sculpture collection has been preserved.
