One of the most popular and well-developed sports on the island
Golf is one of the most popular and well-developed sports on the island. It is played by elderly people, adults and children alike, and can be endless fun that may not be immediately apparent.
There are 22 golf courses in Mallorca, and you can play a round of this wonderful sport 365 days a year. It’s a great reason to come in the low season, with all the benefits involved when booking accommodation, transfers and cultural visits.
Golf is an inclusive sport, and Mallorca has courses where you can get started in a safe and healthy way.
There are countless benefits of adapted golf, such as:
- Building muscle strength and resistance to fatigue.
- Improved vital functions, with benefits for respiratory, cardiovascular and kidney health in particular.
- Improving emotional wellbeing and self-esteem.
- Helping people socialise, building a sense of belonging.
- Helping to improve bone strength and prevent complications such as calcium deficiency and osteoporosis.
- Beating depression and/or anxiety.
In terms of more specific benefits with regard to special needs, it can improve concentration, focus, dexterity, motor skills and peristalsis.
Depending on the player’s disability, different adaptations are used, such as balls that make a sound on the inside for blind players, clubs that are adapted in form and length for people with physical disabilities, and specific chairs that do not damage the green or the fairway, such as the powergolfer and the paragolfer, among others.
Son Muntaner, Arabella, Maioris and Santa Ponsa have all organised tournaments and classes for people with disabilities, and in November 2018 Golf Son Antem will host the International Wheelchair Golf Open Championship (IWGOC). Forty wheelchair players from around the world will enjoy a week on our island, taking part in the first international competition of this kind.
As mentioned in the “Accessible Llucmajor” article, Golf Son Antem is located in Llucmajor, which is only 15 minutes away by car from Palma and the airport.
It features two 18-hole courses, and as soon as you arrive, the accessibility features blend perfectly into the surroundings, allowing easy physical access to the grounds' facilities.
The car park has spaces reserved for this purpose, and the reception area is easily reached via a low ramp. From there you can head to the shop, which has large glass doors, the front desk or cafeteria.
The complex is integrated into a resort with holiday homes, hotel, spa, paddle tennis courts and a small supermarket, all of which are accessible for people with reduced mobility. Adaptations for people with sensory disabilities such as induction loops, tactile paving systems or information in Braille are not available in the complex, but the staff’s friendly attitude will make you feel welcome wherever you go.
If you come with your own paragolfer or powergolfer, access to the loading area is free and accessible, and if you’re looking to take up the game for the first time, you can contact them for information on using the paragolfers available at their Handisport Foundation facilities. In this way you can discover first-hand what the game of golf can do for you, and where you can drive this vehicle that uses two adjustable belts at the knees and torso to put you in a standing position, and which is handled using a simple joystick. In the following video we show you how the paragolfer is used on one of the golf courses in Mallorca.
As you know, if you’re looking to travel in a relaxed style, take a stroll around the old town in Palma, practise your swing and relax in a spa, we’ll be expecting you from October to May here on our island, where the golf courses await.
