Marine Reserve Migjorn de Mallorca

The Migjorn Marine Reserve is located in the southern and south-westerly areas of the island, between Cape Blanc and Cala Figuera cove. It is paradise for the pearly razorfish, or raor, as it is called in the Balearic Islands: a fish of high gastronomic value. Fishing has been restricted to preserve this species.

The Migjorn Marine Reserve can be found in the southern and south-westerly areas of Majorca, between Cape Blanc and Cala Figuera cove. This reserve is the paradise of the pearly razorfish, or raor, as it is called in the Balearic Islands: a fish of high gastronomic value. Fishing has been restricted to preserve this species.

This area was protected in 2002, although its outer limits have been extended several times as a result of the negative impacts of trawl fishing, which has severely damaged marine life.

The presence of calcareous red algae, coral communities, molluscs, posidonia meadows and cymodocea meadows, which serve as breeding grounds for some fish species of fishing interest, are particularly outstanding. In fact, the area between the Cape of Ses Salines and Cala Figuera cove is one of the main fishing grounds for raor.

Snorkelling is permitted throughout the reserve, but a permit is requested for scuba diving, which can be requested here. In both cases, taking any spearfishing equipment or instruments to extract marine species is prohibited. The fish also must not be fed.

Given the size of the protected area, the main species that inhabit the area have not yet been sufficiently studied, and regulation of the area, which is still under development, is different from the rest of the reserves in the archipelago.
