A magnificent example of Majorcan modernism, with an important art collection
This house, which is nowadays also a museum, was built between 1904 and 1911, purportedly by Joan Rubió i Bellver, a Catalan architect that worked in Majorca with Antoni Gaudí. It is especially important because of the lavish decoration of the façade and the stained glass and floor with floral decoration. The original furniture of the house and a collection of 19th and 20th century art are kept inside.
Can Prunera is an outstanding example of Majorcan modernism, with influences from Catalonia and French art nouveau. Its architect is not known, but it is thought to have been Joan Rubió i Bellver (1870-1952), a Catalan architect that worked in Majorca with Antoni Gaudí.
The most important elements are the floral garlands that are sculpted on the façade, the wavy forms of the windows and the cast iron balcony, as well as the stained glass windows and the richly ornamented floors.
The museum is home to part of the original house furniture and a collection of art from the 19th and 20th century, with works by Joan Miró, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Paul Klee, Fernand Léger and Maurice Vlaminck; there are also works from Majorcan painters or painters connected to Majorca, such as Santiago Rusiñol, Joaquim Mir, Joan Fuster or Miquel Barceló.
