Venue Hospital General

In the mid-15th century the public health situation in the city was precarious, in spite of the fact that there were several hospitals, some of them founded after the conquest by Jaime I, in 1229.

In the face of the dispersion of the hospitals, the juries agreed to join them together in a single centre. A request was made to the monarch, Alfonso the Magnanimous, and granted in the month of May of 1456. The master builder, Mateu Forcimanya, from the professional circle of Guillem Sagrera, participated in the construction of the building, and led the work on the hospital at least from 1460 to 1469. Of the original building only the access door, with its beautiful voussoirs topped by the coat of arms of the Crown of Aragon, remains.

The gallery or portico decorating the courtyard that provides access to the church is a modern, Neo-Gothic redesign, made of metal. The urban toponymy of the area surrounding the hospital space reminds us of a series of people who are historically linked to the foundation of the hospital: Calle de Salelles reminds us of the founder of the hospital of Santa Catalina (14th century); Calle de Catany refers to the Franciscan from the Convent of Jesus who was one of the promoters of the General Hospital.
