Venue Magatzem El Águila

Designed in 1908 by Gaspar Bennàssar, it forms a structural complex with its neighbouring building, Can Forteza-Rei. Its façade falls with the Art Nouveau style.

The El Águila building was designed by Gaspar Bennàssar, although Jaume Alenyà, with whom Bennàssar shared an architecture studio, signed off on the design.

The building has four stories. The façade features balconies with undulating iron railings that are extremely dynamic, along with painted ceramic and lush decoration with plant and flower motifs in the Art Nouveau style. The entire building is topped by a decorative semicircular arch.

The commercial function of the building, which was to house the El Águila department store, determined the goal of making the most of the space and having greater natural indoor lighting. The solution adopted was to put into practice the so-called structural theory, which consisted of using new building elements such as iron in this case, and leaving it exposed as a decorative resource. So, the test was skilfully applied and fulfilled the function it was meant to: the iron columns prevented a heavy wall façade and made it possible to install large glass windows that offered a great deal of light, while at the same time achieving a grand and innovative artistic and ornamental effect.
