Archaeological Site Castellum Can Blai

Small fort built in the late period of the Roman Empire. Archaeologists began excavating the remains in the 1980s and are still under study today.

What remains of the castellum (castle) is a square-shaped figure seen from above, from which five rectangular yet slightly diamond-shaped towers stand out. The castellum is a defensive structure, which poses two doubts as to its historical interpretation. It is clearly a building dating from the Roman period based on both its structure and the building techniques used, and it belongs to some period within the long Roman Empire.

It was probably never finished since there is no indication that it was ever occupied. Nor do we know whether it was planned as a Roman campgrounds for a military garrison or whether it was a building made by the inhabitants of Formentera.
