Enjoy a unique experience that will help you to feel part of the island’s most traditional culture.
On 4 and 5 August, the paradisiacal island of Formentera dresses up to the nines to celebrate its traditional Festes de la Terra or Santa Maria festivities. Over the course of these two days, many of the island's towns and villages host different activities and events, both cultural and sporting, in their streets and squares.
The Festes de la Terra are a celebration that was originally religious in nature. However, over time, it has evolved as groups used the opportunity to defend the island’s language and culture, transforming it into a day to celebrate local culture. As a result, the Festes de la Terra are now much more than a religious event. They are an opportunity to immerse yourself in the island's rich history and traditions. With its roots in the Catalan conquest of the Pine Islands in 1235, this festivity is a tribute to Formentera’s identity.
During the festivities, visitors can experience a variety of events rooted in the island's authentic character. These include parades, popular correfocs, local liqueur tasting, book presentations, guided walks, poetry recitals and concerts. It is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to join the community in celebrating its heritage and values.
The high point of the festivities is on 5 August, the Diada de Santa Maria. A mass and a procession are held in Sant Francesc, in honour of the patron saint. Formentera’s residents carry the image of the Virgin through the town's streets, accompanied by music and traditional dances. Later, the Plaça de Sant Francesc hosts ballades and cantades, popular music and dances that give way, at nightfall, to the reading of the proclamation of the festivities, theatrical performances and concerts.
Children and adults, locals and visitors alike can enjoy the best of the island over the course of these days as well as taking part in this traditional festival in honour of the patron saint of Ibiza and Formentera.
