The archaeological history of Ibiza

Ibiza is an ideal destination for archaeology lovers. Its 571 km2 have witnessed the presence of millenary civilisations. From the Phoenicians to the Romans, the island preserves a historical legacy that invites you to let yourself get carried away by its archaeological sites and heritage remains.

One of the most important sites is the Phoenician settlement of sa Caleta, from the 7th century BC, considered the first Phoenician settlement on the island. The site is a World Heritage Site and will soon have an interpretation centre to help visitors understand its historical significance.

The necropolis of Puig des Molins, with its more than 3,000 rock-hewn tombs, also dates back to the 7th century BC and is another fascinating testimony to the Phoenician and Punic periods. Next to it is the Archaeological Museum, where you can explore part of this ancient cemetery.

Other notable sites include the Cova des Culleram, a Punic sanctuary devoted to the goddess Tanit, and the Roman aqueduct of s'Argamassa in Santa Eulària, which transported water to a fish farm on the coast.

A visit to these sites is the best way to learn about Ibiza's rich and diverse history, from its Phoenician origins to the Muslim and medieval periods, including the Roman presence.
