Tourism for everyone

Because of its location and idiosyncrasy, Calvià is considered one of the major tourist destinations in Mallorca. It’s second only to Palma, because of its population density.

Calvià is located in the south-west of the island, and is next to Palma, Puigpunyent, Galilea and Andratx. Within the municipal boundaries there are 18 different localities, of which ten are tourist resorts with a very specific and separate clientele in each area.

Palmanova, Santa Ponsa, Peguera, Magaluf, Port Adriano, Portals, Bendinat, Son Caliu, Illetas and Costa de la Calma are the main spots frequented by visitors, and where you can enjoy tourism for everyone.

Calvià has several luxury leisure harbours, such as Puerto Portals and Port Adriano, nautical clubs such as Palmanova and Santa Ponsa, 26 beaches, all of which are under the gaze of the highest point in Calvià, the Puig de Galatzó, part of the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, which wraps around the municipality in the inland areas of Calvià and Es Capdellà.

The history of Calvià is present everywhere, with Santa Ponsa being the place where King James I disembarked and from where the conquest of Mallorca began. Every year during its popular festivities in the first week of September, you can enjoy a representation of the landing of his troops in the bay, the battle between Moors and Christians, and the medieval camp and market that inundates the locality.

Livestock, rural areas, fun, leisure options and sport are all in abundance in the municipality, and which can be enjoyed by everyone.  Let’s look at a few examples:

By land:

Only 20 minutes from the airport by car, Calvià has great access by means of eurotaxis (adapted taxis), adapted public transport and private transport operating throughout the island.

The municipality has a footpath running through the municipality, and which takes in nearly all the urban centres – the Paseo Calvià. At 32 km long, this pedestrian walkway makes it possible to enjoy Calvià in a sporting fashion that is perfectly accessible in wheelchair or handbike. There are only two sections with slopes to navigate: where the path runs from Peguera to Cala Figuera, which has an incline of 8.1%, and the stretch from Cas Català to Bendinat, where there are spots with an incline between 7 and 8%. It’s a great way to make your way around the municipality without the need for transport.

Another land-based option can be found in the heart of the Serra de Tramuntana: if you take the road from Palmanova to Es Capdellà, you’ll come to Es Galatzó, a public green space that makes up 10% of the municipality and where accessible walking is possible with the help of the Handisport Foundation. There’s a public car park and adapted toilets next to the property known as “Ses Cases”.

The estate has various walking routes, which are all categorised and which explain the itinerary to follow and the degree of difficulty involved.

It’s a spectacular place, full of legend and tradition, and which is set to become a key part of your time in Mallorca, having reached the mountain safely and independently.

The municipality also has companies that help with renting elements and technical aids such as scooters, wheelchairs, transfer cranes, etc.

By sea:

If the holiday of your dreams includes chilling out on the beach or taking a dip in the Mediterranean, at Calvià we’ve got a whole of range of options for you. These range from the small Buganvilla beach at Cas Català, which has an accessible lift and adapted bathing for easy beach access, to the spacious Santa Ponsa beach, where there are shaded areas and technical aids for assisted bathing. The municipality has at least eight beaches with services for people with disabilities.

They are Playa Buganvilla at Cas Català, El Oratorio at Portals Nous, Es Carregador, Son Matías and Palmanova, all in Palmanova, Santa Ponsa and Palmira and Torà in Peguera.

If your thing is adventure activities in the sea, remember that you can try accessible water skiing at Palmanova, as well as adapted diving. You can find more information on all these points at the following link: www.visitcalvia.com
