Convent or monastery Sant Jeroni

Near El Templo, between the Calatrava district and the former Jewish quarter, or Call Major, in 1485 the monastery of Santa Elisabet was founded, which was however known by the name of Sant Jeroni.

In the same place, earlier on, an ephemeral male community of Beguines had been established (circa 1317 to 1355). When they left the installations, the later were used by a community of Franciscan nuns which lasted until the San Geronimo nuns moved in the year 1485. The new community was mainly formed by Augustine nuns from the monastery on the Pollença mountain, who later adopted the rule of San Geronimo. The convent building was gradually extended and in 1555 work began on the current church, dedicated to the patron saint of the order, Saint Geronimo or ‘Sant Jeroni’.

The surviving late Gothic artistic heritage includes the image of Our Lady of La Consolación, by the sculptor Gabriel Mòger (1507), and the altarpiece of Sant Jeroni, the work of the painter Pere Terrencs, of which only the central table remains now (1508). Moreover, we should highlight the existence of an important archive with documentation starting from the 15th century.
