Garden Palau del Bisbe

The garden of the Episcopal Palace is a special place steeped in history, located in the very heart of the old centre of the city of Palma. Its walls preserve evidence of the city's Roman origins, while its layout allows us to follow the how the gardens of the manor houses have evolved since the Middle Ages.

A monumental gateway, built in 1931 in the mannerist style, provides direct access from the street. On the right, a row of cypress trees guards the walls of the important palace archive. On the left, the garden occupies an embankment surrounded by sloping walls, in which the stone forms patterns and adorns the pillars like large buds and precious stones.

The medieval pool, where water lilies grow in the water under the shade of a trellis covered in bougainvillea, divides the space in two. The upper section features an orange orchard, some lemon trees and other fruit trees.

The lower section is occupied by half of an ancient formal garden, laid out in the shape of a cross in the most traditional Renaissance style, and is cut off by low boxwood brambles. A square fountain is preserved at ground level, marking what was once the centre of the cross.

Aromatic plants, such as rosemary, thyme and sage, together with pots of clivia and geraniums, complete this refreshing oasis in the intricate historic centre. Above the walls, there is an impressive view of the rose window that illuminates the presbytery of La Seu.
