Garden Reial Cartoixa de Valldemossa

Between the mighty stone walls that guarded a life of contemplation in the early monastery of Cartoixa, the gardens were the gap through which nature slipped in. Their essence has survived the long history of the monumental complex.

The tour includes the old cloister which houses the central garden. It is laid out in the shape of a cross, with paths lined by myrtle bushes, paved with smooth pebbles and with an uneven surface due to the roots of the hundred-year-old trees that have made their way along the path. Stone and green are its permanent attributes, symbols of the extreme austerity practised by the Cartoixans.

In the monastery's cells, the monks had a small garden, where their studies and reflection were accompanied by manual activity. These were the only places for flowers, where visitors can now appreciate the colours and scents of the rosebushes and enjoy views of the valley of Valldemossa, as described by Chopin in his memorable stay in the monastery together with George Sand.
