An agritourism business with direct sales of beef and wine
Son Menut is a superb estate in Felanitx that was originally home to horses. Over time, they have created a kind of ecosystem around them, and they now have an agritourism business with accommodation, a vineyard for wine and a farm that breeds Irish Dexter cattle. And it’s all run entirely by the Barceló family.
Pilar Barceló is the second generation of her family to be in charge of Son Menut, a charming agritourism business. The family company means the world to her. And it has evolved considerably over the years. On this estate in Felanitx (Mallorca), you can find wine, Irish Dexter beef, a range of other farm products, and even take horse-riding lessons.
It was Pilar’s father who started Son Menut, 30 years ago. He began by raising horses, expanding the business over time, setting up a riding school, the agritourism business, a restaurant and a vineyard. The baton has now been handed to the Barceló sisters, particularly Pilar, who upon completing her hotel management studies in hotel management, in 2016, qualified as a young farmer and started working alongside, and with the same approach as, her father. Today, she defines herself as a “farmer 2.0”.
Son Menut is place with plenty of personality. The agritourism accommodation was an old farmhouse, which has been refurbished and extended to meet the needs of modern guests. Also on the land is a riding school with three pens, one of which is covered. The vineyard can be seen from the agritourism house. The vines were planted in 2001 over around 20,000 square metres, with a wide variety of vegetation characteristic of the Mallorcan countryside.
There are two Son Menut wines: a single-variety red (Merlot) and a young white Muscatel. Pilar Barceló doesn’t rule out extending the vineyard to increase capacity.
Irish Dexter oxen and cows were brought to the farm in 2006. The 40 or so animals graze freely, with around 15 hectares of pasture. When they feel that the cattle are at the right moment, they are taken to be slaughtered for meat production, which includes a 28-day ageing process before it is consumed or sold.
They’re always happy to welcome visitors at Son Menut. But if you want to be the first to try its products, the best thing to do is book a table at its restaurant, where three quarters of the meat and vegetable produce cooked is sourced on site.
