Mallorca, the true island of tranquility

Among all the destinations of our Spanish geography, the island of Majorca is as beautiful in every season. The largest of the Balearic Islands changes its skin as soon as the summer is over, and offers natural, historical and cultural charms of great value. When the high season is over, the island presents itself in a completely new, unique and charming version. 

On this four - day tour, we suggest you to discover the island in its own state, enjoying every landscape without hustle and bustle and without long queues, and becoming part of what the island is without a doubt: the true island of tranquility. Before you enter the narrow paths of the Tramuntana Mountains and experience the magic of the Majorcan ports, we recommend you to experience the magic of the capital on the first day, on which to enjoy the essence of Palma. 

The city awakens with the first rays of the sun and fills every corner and place with the stimulating aroma of coffee. With all its film-like sceneries and a cuisine unique in the world, this statement is all too understandable: "One thing is to have just breakfast, and another to eat breakfast in Mallorca." What is the goal? To enjoy the breakfast like the kings with 100 per cent Majorcan flavor. 

Although there are plenty of cafes to choose from, there is no better way to greet the day in one of the cafeterias on Santa Eulalia Square. Less than 50 meters away from the mythical Plaça de Cort, this square is famous for its natural beauty, which comes from the imposing gothic church and home to the centuries-old olive tree and town hall. 

On this square you can enjoy not only the breakfast, consisting in the juice of Sóller oranges, coffee and llonguets (the long, narrow typical bread rolls of the capital) with tomato and olive oil but also the true rhythm of life of the Palma´s inhabitants. Business people on the way to their work, children on the way to school, shops with a century tradition opening their doors and the one or other group of tourists strolling on the street. 

The early hours of the day in the heart of Palma is ideal to enjoy in the autumn all what is lost in the summer months due to the tourist flows. The perfect route? Begin with a stroll on the nearby commercial streets (Sant Miquel and Jaume II), followed by a quick visit to the entrances of the Town Hall and the Balearic Government Seat (Ajuntament de Palma and Consell de Mallorca), and then the Palau March and the Almudaina before reaching the most beautiful place of our city, the cathedral. 

Although it is one of the most visited tourist attractions in the summer, the cathedral in autumn is a jewel that is to be discovered in peace, with love and plenty of time; so we recommend that you take at least two hours to get to know the cathedral and to admire the beauty of its glass windows and chapels. 

After peace and tranquility have impinged you, it is our recommendation to enjoy the Parc de la Mar, the artificial lake between the cathedral and the Bay of Palma. On your charming stroll, you can also enjoy wonderful panoramic views and shoot shots. The best thing about his location? The proximity to other places of interest such as the Barrio de la Lonja district or the Passeig Sagrera, two places that you can reach in less than ten minutes. 

That Palma lives with a view of the sea is beyond doubt; you can feel it in the life rhythm of the city, in its kitchen and, of course, in its character. To discover this perfect connection between the gothic cathedral and the Mediterranean you should visit Portitxol, one of the most beautiful districts of the city. 

With its lläuts – the traditional boats – and its fishermen who are repairing their nets, Portitxol is a fishermen’s´ quarter and authentic as no other. It is a beautiful district, with its low cottages with local flair and its terraces, to enjoy vermouth, a beer or one of the local sweets. The best? Its rest in autumn. In the summer it is almost impossible to get a table in the front row by the sea. 

After the small obligatory siesta and with the Mediterranean flavor still on our palate, we have to plan the afternoon in Palma. What do you think of a glass of wine and some tapas in Santa Catalina? This neighborhood in Palma's city center is the meeting point of the true Palmesanos and all those who want to end their day with a good glass of Mallorcan wine. It is very recommendable to have the tranquility of this district in autumn impinge you.

With more than six hundred kilometers of coastline, Mallorca is the most popular destination for hundreds of cruise ships that choose this island as a destination, and is also a reference for all those who like to sail with the sailing yacht or motorboat. This fact means that the island has many ports. They see the coming and going of the tourists in the summer, and are just as lively in the autumn, but still much (very much) more beautiful.

The first stop on this route through the ports in Mallorca's south-west begins in Puerto Portals, a world-known port about eight kilometers from Palma. Its stately driveway is a taste of what awaits us: a marina full of charm that is in no way inferior to the marinas of Cagliari (in Sardinia) or Monaco. 

You can stroll freely in the Portals port between the pontoons, where the most magnificent yachts anchor. The harbor is full of life - yes, even in the autumn months - and here there are always markets and concerts, and the terraces where you can eat or have a coffee are always open. Are you a lover of international fashion? Then we have good news for you: in the shops on the boulevard you will find all important brands such as Versace, Just Cavalli or Blue Marin. 

After this visit, we suggest you to know Port Adriano. The port is a revelation; it is the most exclusive and at the same time one of the most beautiful ports of the Balearic Islands. To get to Port Adriano, return to the Palma-Andratx motorway and take the El Toro exit. There, in less than five kilometers in direct line, you will again discover the sea, and with the sea, the way down to the port and the new marina. 

The arrival in Port Adriano is like visiting a small, parallel world full of life, a place where you can enjoy the rays of the autumn sun (on the small beach with turquoise water). Here you can book lessons in the diving school, and here cuisine is written in capital letters. So do not hesitate: when the time for lunch approaches, choose one of the restaurants with fresh fish in Port Adriano. 

Beyond all what the front of the port (its oldest side) shows Port Adriano is the base for Europe's most important marina. It was recently designed and built by Philippe Stark. It is one of the most modern sports harbors in Europe and its goal is to accommodate large format yachts. 

The geographic location of the island and the fact that the sun goes down at 17:30 in autumn are two perfect excuses to experience the sunset at this place in Mallorca. Although you can enjoy the sunset in the harbor itself, there is hardly anything better than the natural viewpoint of the Malgrats Islands to experience movie-like sunsets. 

On this excursion to the most exclusive ports of Mallorca, a route through the port of Puerto de Andratx cannot be missed. Puerto de Andratx is visited by the most respected celebrities of the world. In addition to a stroll through the harbor in the late afternoon, you can enjoy the best Mediterranean essence with a quality dinner at one of the seaside restaurants. One of the best of these restaurants is the famous Rocamar.

Whether your visit lasts two, three or four days - no visit to Mallorca should end without the beauties of our beautiful Serra de Tramuntana mountains. The mountains have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and are the perfect place to discover the fauna and flora of the Balearic Islands.

Many guests prefer to explore the mountains by car, on a route starting in Esporles and ending in the port of Sóller; but we suggest you to get to know the true Tramuntana mountains by foot, with a backpack, on one of the popular trails, with the peace and quiet that characterize the hiking trails in the autumn months. What route do we suggest? The route from Deià to the Cala Muleta refuge, one of the most popular routes in the Tramuntana mountains among all those included in the Pedra en Sèc (stone buildings erected without mortar) route. 

Deià is acknowledged as one of the most beautiful and true villages of the Serra de Tramuntana. The village is the starting point for a four-hour hike (a little over ten kilometers), which runs along the edge of our mountains.

Well protected with warm clothing, with good walking shoes and full batteries in your camera, you can leave Deià behind you and visit the beautiful little bay. You reach this first stop on the Camí dels Ribassos trail and after you have crossed a considerable incline. The bay is truly worth a visit and a snapshot.

Once you have returned about a hundred meters and you are back on the GR211 long-distance trail (do not be afraid to get lost because the whole path is well signposted), you can return to the mountainous path to the Son Coll farm and the Font de Ses Mentides Well. From this point, you can reach two of the most beautiful points of this hiking trail: Sa Plana and Era de Can Prohom on quiet and deeply wooded trails. Both places show you the whole size of the Sóller valley, with the imposing Penayal of Migdia as a highlight of the tour.

Beyond our landscapes and our cuisine, Mallorca also stands for textiles and shoes. A good proof of this is towns like Inca, the starting point of our last secret route on the island of tranquility. The town is located thirty kilometers from Palma and is a true temple of the shoe industry, where you can get to know the latest trends of the season and buy shoes almost at a cost price, such as Camper, Lottuse or Bestard, and all that without long queues and the usual crowds in shops or workshops.

A shopping route in Inca - breakfast on the popular Plaza de España included - is the ideal plan to combine with a route to the north of the island. Inca - Mallorca's third largest town - is the foyer of the most important sights in the north of Mallorca, such as Pollença, Alcúdia and of course, the incredible Cap de Formentor.

With a direct view of Majorca's neighboring island, Cap de Formentor is another particularly beautiful and peaceful destination in the autumn. How to get to the Cape? You just have to follow the highway (and leave Inca behind) heading towards Sa Pobla, and then take the exit to the MA2000 road with direction to Port de Pollença.

You can stroll for hours in the beautiful town of Pollença, but you should definitely see and feel the magic of Cap de Formentor; quite sure, even if the ride in the car is a bit stressful because of the narrow road and the many curves.
