Marine Reserve Llevant de Mallorca

It is a favourite spot among divers. The underwater caves and the high biodiversity of the area make it highly attractive for visitors.

Levante Marine Reserve and Cala Ratjada cove are a favourite spot for divers. The underwater caves and high biodiversity of the area make it a very attractive place for visitors.

The coastal area features both rocky areas and cliffs with white-sand beaches between Cala Mata and Cala Pedruscada coves, and covers over 11,000 hectares in inland waters and open sea. Of these, 1900 hectares are part of the fully protected reserve. Fishing in all its forms is therefore prohibited. Snorkelling, meanwhile, is permitted and highly recommended.

Why? Because this marine area is an explosion of life. It is home to more than 900 species in an excellent state of conservation, mainly algae, fish and molluscs. The rocky seabed is home to groupers, scorpion fish, lobsters, spiny lobsters and slipper lobsters.

Particularly impressive is the biodiversity of the caves of Cap des Freu, unique in the archipelago, and their sandy seabed is home to emblematic species such as the pearly razorfish. It is also possible to see some migratory species, especially in the summer–autumn season. These include dolphinfish and squid, which are highly commercially prized.

Finally, we can't ignore the presence of posidonia meadows, authentic incubators of life which are spread over both rocky and sandy areas of the ocean floor.
