Ramon Llull route or Mystical route (Castellitx-Randa-Cura)

Route along the main settings of Majorcan medieval mystique. It includes several oratories, hermitages and points for pilgrimage, retreat and ascetic life. The spirit of Ramón Llull permeates the whole path.

The route starts in Algaida, more specifically in the old parish church of Castellitx, also known as Mare de Déu de la Pau, located between Algaida and the Puig de Randa. This church is of early Gothic style, with a single nave divided into three aisles, covered by diaphragm arches supporting the beams. Legend has it that the image of the Virgin, from 1430, was unearthed near the current chapel.

The route continues upward along the Randa mountain until it reaches a signposted turn-off to the right to the Gràcia Sanctuary. It was established at the Aresta cave, the point to where Franciscan friars would retire to complete their vows of poverty and austerity during the 15th century. The first chapel became a centre for pilgrimage under the aegis of Our Lady of Grace (Nostra Senyora de Gràcia). Inside the church, it is important to mention the tiles of the 18th century Saint Anne chapel, the first chapel on the left side, and the image of the Virgin Mary.

The Saint Honoratus chapel is on the same path that reaches the Cura Sanctuary. In the mid-14th century, other knights also chose Randa to start a religious life and requested an authorisation to build the chapel. It currently belongs to the order of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart and provides a lodging service.

The Our Lady of Cura Sanctuary, which was started in the 15th century, is located on the summit of the Randa mountain. This was the spot of the first School of Latin Grammar, which remained active until 1826. The first chapel, from the 15th century, was refurbished in the 17th century. The sanctuary has a lodging service. It is a privileged location that offers a spectacular view over the whole island. One of the nearby caves was chosen by Ramón Llull for his retreat. Legend has it that it was the point where a mission was revealed to him: to write a book to refute all the false beliefs of the infidels.
