A sample of Neo-gothic civil architecture
This is one of the most representative examples of neo-Gothic on the island. The building got underway under the supervision of Joaquim Pavia in 1882, and it was continued by Joan Guasp after 1885. It was built over the former prison and was the home of the Provincial Council since it was opened. It is currently the headquarters of the Council of Mallorca.
The façade has four octagonal towers and four pilasters crowned with sculpted coats-of-arms of all of the four largest Balearic Islands. The heraldic motifs on the first floor belong to the most important towns on Mallorca: Pollença, Inca, Alcúdia, Felanitx, Llucmajor, Manacor and Sóller. The ornamental reliefs on the façade were rendered by sculptor Llorenç Ferrer.
If you can enter it, you will see an imperial staircase that goes up to the main floor. On the first landing there are stained glass windows featuring allegories of the Balearic Islands: Menorca on the left, Mallorca in the middle and Ibiza and Formentera on the right. The most noteworthy features of the main floor are the plenary room, with rich wooden carvings (furniture and panelled ceiling) and paintings and historicist stained.
