Natural Monument Les Salines de Formentera

The Salt Flats of Formentera are a great option if you want to explore the history and nature of the island in the same visit. This iconic landscape offers a unique combination of natural beauty and cultural heritage, with its pink and purple hues.

This complex system of salt flats, located around S'Estany Pudent, uses seawater channels to concentrate the salt. The salt crystallised in ponds before being extracted. In 2004, they were declared an Asset of Cultural Interest as a historical site, being the only industry on the island before the arrival of tourism.

The first mention of these salt flats dates from the time of the Christian Reconquest, which proves their existence during the Muslim domination. However, the salt flats went through a long period of abandonment, from the 14th century until the end of the 17th century, a period marked by insecurity and depopulation on Formentera. In 1897, the company that owned the Ibiza salt flats acquired the Formentera salt flats for 80,400 pesetas. The following year, this company was renamed Salinera Española and was in charge of salt exploitation in Ibiza and Formentera until 1984.

Today, the salt flats are an excellent place for walking and cycling, thanks to their scenic value and their importance for bird watching. As you explore the area, you will have the opportunity to observe a rich biodiversity, especially on the Es Brolls path around the Pudent Lake. This trail borders the lagoon, where you can see water birds in their natural habitat. The presence of underground freshwater springs creates an ideal nesting environment for these birds.

Pudent Lake is known to be home to one of the largest concentrations of black-necked grebes in Europe. On calm days, with the still waters of the lake, you can observe these elegant birds reflected in the water, a truly breathtaking visual spectacle.

The Salt Flats of Formentera are part of the green routes 1 and 3, itineraries designed for exploring the island on foot or by bicycle, and which connect with the beaches of Ses Illetes and Cala Saona, two beautiful coves of white sand and turquoise waters the beauty of which will take your breath away.
