The only dairy in Mallorca that makes cheese on site and with milk from its own cows
Three generations have worked on this farm in the south of Mallorca, located very near to the idyllic beaches of Sa Ràpita, Colònia de Sant Jordi and Es Trenc. The Burguera brothers run an artisanal production process in modern, well-managed facilities.
Formatges Burguera is one of the few authentic dairy farms to remain in Campos (Mallorca), where in 1914 the building of windmills to extract water began to revolutionise cattle farming in the area, with dairy farms opening to produce milk and cheese. Today, Formatges Burguera is one of the very few companies left in Mallorca, if indeed there are any others, that makes its cheese on site and with milk from its own cows, for which it has earned master artisan status.
Sebastià and Jaume Burguera are the third generation of the family to work on the land and with dairy cows. Until not so long ago, Campos smelled of manure, of living countryside. The two brothers define themselves as peasant farmers, just as their parents and grandparents were. And it’s precisely that wealth of accumulated experience, combined with their dedication, that has got them to where they are today.
The herd of cows at Formatges Burguera has a great genetic selection that produces very high-quality milk. Obtaining the finest dairy products by caring for their animals and using environment friendly processes has always been their main goal.
Their philosophy involves using an artisanal production process in modern, well-managed facilities. The dairy has individual beds for the animals, an automated cleaning system, to ensure the cows are always clean and dry, and a roller brush for their enjoyment and wellbeing.
No artificial fertilisers are used, and the cows are fed with forage produced on the farm. Only cow’s milk, lactic acid starter and curd are used to make the cheeses, with no colourants or preservatives: fresh soft cheese, semi-cured, cured, requesón (similar to ricotta) and llet formatjada (the milk resulting from the cheese-making process); all packaged and distributed by members of the family, something greatly appreciated by Formatges Burguera customers.
The point of sale is at their facilities, on the road from Campos to Colònia de Sant Jordi, very near to the idyllic beaches of Es Trenc, Sa Ràpita and Colònia de Sant Jordi. Visits to the dairy are possible, where you can learn about their production processes and taste the cheeses – a privilege of an experience for tourists visiting Mallorca.
