Local producer OLÍRIC

Olive groves have returned to the family estate of Ses Rotes after an absence of 200 years. The result is Olíric, a very Mediterranean oil made from the Arbequina and Koroneiki varieties (the latter originally from Crete). This is the Miqul Coll family project.

Over 200 years ago there were olive groves at Ses Rotes estate, in Santa Eugenia (Mallorca), but they were replaced by grapevines, and later by almond trees. In 2020, Miquel Coll Crespí decided to plant new olive trees and set up Olíric, an exciting family project to produce organic extra virgin olive oil.

Miquel wanted Olíric to have a very Mediterranean flavour. This he has achieved by using two olive varieties: Arbequina, from Arbeca (Lleida), which lends a sweet and fruity note, and the Koroneiki, originally from Crete (Greece), which brings high levels of oleic acid to improve how well the oil can keep.

The production process begins with harvesting the olives, in late October or early November, when the olives are perfectly ripe. In less than 24 hours they are taken to the oil press, where they are milled and the oil extracted. They then go back to the estate, where they are stored in the best possible conditions. Around 7-8 kg of olives are needed to obtain one litre of Olíric.

This is a completely organic oil, with no chemical products of any kind used at any point of the process. By way of guarantee, it is registered with the Balearic Council of Organic Agricultural Products.

Ses Rotes is located in the foothills of the Puig de Son Seguí, looking across to the Serra de Tramuntana. This six-hectare family farm originally belonged to Miquel’s great-grandfather, Gabriel Canyelles, who divided the estate between his two daughters. One of the two halves is home to the Olíric groves, totalling 1,500 trees.

Olíric is a portmanteau of two words: oli (oil in Catalan) and oníric (oneiric, relating to dreams), describing the landscape where this virgin olive oil is produced. If you fancy paying the place a visit and taking in this fora vila landscape, with an oil-tasting session included, you can arrange an appointment by phone or via the website.
