Local product Patata de Sa Pobla

Large potatoes fields greet all visitors of Sa Pobla. This Mallorcan village, in the north-east of the island, has a fertile land which gives its inhabitants all kinds of field products, bombeta or pobler rice, and especially potatoes, its large flagship.

The potato arrived at the island towards the end of the 16th century, and quickly adapted itself to the new environment. In 1924 the first shiploads left the island towards England. The export adventure, which continues to this day, had begun. Today a large part of the potato harvest is still marketed internationally. This is the Maris Peer potato, which has paved its way for the tables of countries like England, Scandinavia, Poland, Germany…

But it is not just the foreigners who enjoy this high quality product. Here one also appreciates the good things. And with such a blessed country, it is no wonder that the cuisine of Sa Pobla is one of the most valued of the island. There are not a few cellers (traditional restaurants) of the area that incorporate this product into their typical recipes, be it the frit or the tumbet.

Another way to enjoy the local cuisine is to visit the Feria Nocturna de la Patata (Night Potato Festival). It is celebrated every year at the beginning of June and transforms the Plaça Major into a large shop window, where bars and restaurants highlight the culinary possibilities of this product.
