Views from the lighthouse
It was built in 1992 with the rock of the zone. Today we still can observe, next to the lighthouse, the quarry used for its construction
A solitary cape, if ever there was one, isolated, and at the mercy of the storms of the north winds. It is in the north of Menorca and borders the Natural Park of S'Albufera des Grau, the largest wetland area on the island. The cabo de Favàritx is a rocky point of black slate, inhabited by small plants, some of which are endemic, forming bays on both of its sides.
The coast is a landscape of low cliffs, of black and grey slate, one of the oldest geological terrains in the Balearic Islands. It is still possible to find in the slate fossils of the first creatures to live in this place thousands of years ago, such as crustaceans and other marine creatures.
The lighthouse is beaten by the winds, and the waves often flood an area of level ground beyond the pebble beach, which on drying forms a whitish surface, known as "la salina" or salt pan. It is said that on the night of the full moon, walking through these puddles will bring you energy and fertility, the finest gifts of the moon and the sea.
It is the most modern lighthouse in Menorca, opened on 24 September 1922, and stands 47 metres above sea level. Its light can be seen from 26 miles away. In 1997 it was the location for the film El faro (The Lighthouse), by the director Miguel Balaguer.
