A VISIT TO MAHÓN

If you are wondering what to do during your getaway to Menorca, a visit to Mahón (Maó) is a must.

The natural port of Mahón is undoubtedly one of the best places to visit, as it is the most important port in Menorca and one of the largest natural ports in the world (5 kilometres long). Due to its intense tourist activity, it is full of bars and restaurants where you can taste the delights of Menorcan gastronomy. It is also where Mahón's nightlife is concentrated.

Mahon is a city of great historical wealth, so it is worth visiting the main sights of the capital. First of all, at the mouth of the port itself is the Fortress of La Mola, the main and most important military engineering work in Menorca. The Town Hall, with its emblematic 18th century clock at the top is right in the centre of Mahón, in the Plaza de la Constitución. Then there is the Church of Santa María, with its 19th century organ with four keyboards and 3120 pipes. Following the historical route, we suggest a stop at the Portal de San Roque (Bastion of San Roc) to see the remains of the main gate of the wall that surrounded the city.

Being the capital city, Mahón is easy to get to.

The Ciutadella de Menorca (better known as Ciudadela de Menorca or simply Ciudadela) is the second urban nucleus of the island. It was the old capital of Menorca and today it is a city with a lot of charm and historical character, so it is also worth a stop and visit.

Like Mahon, the port of Ciudadela is an emblematic site and a centre of leisure and gastronomy, so we encourage you to tour the city and enjoy everything it has to offer. There is much to see in the Ciudadela but for a quick visit we recommend the main sites of interest, such as the Cathedral of Menorca, the most important Gothic building on the island; the Plaza Es Born, the emblem of the city; the Castle of San Nicolás, the most modern and elegant tower in Menorca; and, finally, the Municipal Museum of Ciudadela to admire Menorca's rich history.

VISIT SOME OF MENORCA’S BEACHES

Menorca has endless heavenly beaches and coves and seeing them all in two days is impossible. Which is why we recommend visiting the most emblematic ones, such as Playa Son Bou, the largest one on the island; the Cala Mitjana, an unspoiled cove in
the centre of Menorca; and Cala Morell, perfect for snorkelling and scuba diving.

SHOPPING IN MENORCA

Menorca has a large shopping centre, the Binipreu, where you can find a large supermarket, pharmacy and clothes and toy shops and typical products from Menorca.

Also, along the island, mainly in Mahón and Ciudadela, we find a great variety of local shops and markets that offer products and crafts originating from the island, such as the famous avarcas menorquinas, a type of footwear that has become the perfect souvenir to take home.

ACTIVITIES AND EXCURSIONS IN MENORCA

Beyond its beautiful beaches and coves, Menorca has a varied tourist offer for all tastes, below we recommend some activities to do if you are walking around the island:

 - Cycle tourism. Menorca is a perfect island to see by bike. It is practically flat, without great unevenness and with relatively short distances between the main centres of interest, which allows you to lose yourself and discover it with a push on the pedal.

- Route of the fortresses. If you are a history lover, you can't miss the route of the fortresses to discover the history of the island in the 18th century. Enjoy the best views of the island and know the history of its conquests through underground galleries, moats, powder kegs, rooms dug into the rock, towers, castles and cisterns.

- Talayot Menorca. Menorca is a real open-air museum. It gathers a great variety of megalithic constructions that show the life and customs of its prehistoric inhabitants. Take the Talayot route of Menorca and visit the island's most emblematic archaeological sites, including the Taula i Talaiot de Trepucó archaeological site, the Cala Morell necropolis and the Talayot de Torelló.

 - Diving and snorkelling in Menorca. We have seen that Menorca has beaches and coves with clean and crystal-clear waters. They offer an enormous visibility which makes them ideal for snorkelling and diving. The marine fauna abounds everywhere and there are dives for all levels, so we recommend consulting the list of companies that offer these services to enjoy the best places for snorkelling and diving in Menorca.

- Boat trips and excursions. If you come to Menorca and like the sea, give yourself the pleasure of sailing through its crystal-clear waters doing aquatic activities such as kayaking, snorkelling and scuba diving. From both ports a variety of companies offer daily excursions to the different coves and beaches of the island and to the other Balearic Islands.

- Menorca with kids. Menorca is the quietest of the Balearic Islands and is ideal for family trips. It offers a great variety of activities and ideas combining beaches, nature and culture.

- llocs de Menorca and the Mahonese Cheese Route. Soak up the Menorcan essence in a quiet atmosphere and visit the Ilocs de Menorca. Explore the island's agricultural landscapes, visit the typical white houses of the Menorcan estates where the famous Mahonese cheese, with Denomination of Origin, is made. Discover how it is made, first-hand from the best producers, while tasting the best pieces.

Menorca is the quietest of the Balearic Islands. There is also a wide variety of nightlife to suit all tastes.

In Ciudadela, the Port is the centre of nightlife with many bars and terraces for those who prefer to enjoy a drink and a quieter night. The Es Pla area is where you will find the largest number of nightclubs on the island, making it the perfect place for a night out in Menorca.

Mahón also has a lively nightlife, whether in the harbour or in the historic centre.

The most popular clubs in Menorca are Cova d’en Xoroi, a disco built into the rocks with views of the sea. Jazzbah is one of the most well known in Menorca and is the most frequented by young people and tourists. Finally, Kopas Club, a very stylish three-storey club with varied music for all tastes.

Gastronomy says a lot about the essence of the place, so you can't leave Menorca without trying some of its typical delicacies. Some of the most traditional dishes you'll find in Menorca's restaurants are the famous caldereta de langosta, the typical dish of Menorca; the classic mayonnaise and Mahon cheese; Menorcan stuffed aubergines; carquinyolis, the traditional sweet biscuits from Menorca; and the pomada, a gin-based drink typical of Menorca's fiestas.
